PP Peter Castell is on his Bike

Secretary of Weston Club, Peter Castell, is doing well in the first few days of his attempt to cycle from Lands End to John O’ Groats.
He is reporting on Facebook where you can leave him words of encouragement , or tell him how crazy you think he is, but if you are not one of the 900 million Facebook users then you might be interested in his photos on – https://picasaweb.google.com/weston.rotary.photos – which I will update as he goes along, and the text below from his daily posts.
He is raising money for Prostate Cancer Research and our local Club Charities. He’s doing well, over £2,000 so far but it’s such a good cause and such a monumental effort you might like to support him with a donation – http://www.justgiving.com/peter-castell

DAY 6 Friday
18
th May

Hello day 6 start out cold
and windy and spitting with rain it remained that way pretty much all day.
Highlight of the day was crossing the Mersey into Liverpool
even though it only took 10 mins. Went to the Walker Gallery
to see the Rolf Harris exhibition only to find that I was a day early. So I
carried on to Southport now in an Italian,
tucking into some pasta and of course a Peroni. 68 miles 11 mph average speed
have now passed the 400 mile mark, soon be halfway.

DAY 5
Thursday 17th May
Hello great start this
morning couldn’t get out of my room; a piece of the key had broken off and had
to ring the owner to let me out. It had rained overnight, but was dry when I
started off the first 30 miles was a bit boring just rolling green fields
everywhere at 11 I stopped at The Lion Hotel for a cup of tea and there were 2
end to enders in there, they were from Sweden we had a chat over a cup of
tea.

We went on together for the next 40 miles,
stopping for a long lunch in Shrewsbury, we went onto Ellesmere where we
parted and went to look for a b & b. I finally solved the problem of the
elusive pint. I’m staying in the Red Lion a real lively pub with real friendly
staff. 70 miles today at an average speed of 12.8 mph a fast
day!
DAY 4
Wednesday 16th May
Hello The day started at
8.45 again today when I met Pres Richard in Banwell on his bike and he rode with
me to Yatton on the Strawberry Line where we met up with Anne Horsfield and
daughter Nina and granddaughter Seren we had a coffee in the little cafe there
after a couple of group Photos I went on my way.

Met 3 other end to enders on the Severn Bridge had a short chat and the obligatory
photos it was cold and blowing a gale on the bridge.

Just out of Chepstow had a bacon roll and a cup of tea bought
by a chap called Lee as he thought I deserved it.

Bit of a slog between Monmouth and Hereford I arrived at 4.50
did 68 miles at an average speed of 11.8 mph

I’m off for something to eat now and of course a pint.
DAY 3
Tuesday 15th May
Hello the end of the third
day this went very well left Collumpton at 8.45 seems to me to be my favourite
time to leave after a leisurely breakfast full English of course. a quite large
hill just after I left which reminded me of my
breakfast.

Arrived in
Taunton by 10 and joined the Taunton Bridgwater canal this is one my favourite
rides a bit spoilt today by a strong and gusting North wind this slowed me down
to 8 mph at times but I still arrived home by 2.30, 2 hours ahead of schedule.
You know what this means that I at last will get my
pint
DAY 2
Monday 14th May
Started at 8.45 this
morning in the rain got to Tavistock by 10 and started my ascent of Dartmoor it
was just uphill for miles couldn’t see anything the cloud was down to the ground
when I got Postbridge visibility was getting better then we had some downhill
stretches and I can tell 41 mPh is exciting, but 46.7 mph with a sweeping bend
at bottom is terrifying am now Collumpton in b and b miles from anywhere so no
pint tonight again Peter
DAY 1
Sunday 13th May 2012
Woke up this morning to
blue sky and wind in right direction only to find I have gone down with a cold
blocked nose croaky voice you know how it is. We arrived at Lands End about 8.15
took photo’s and I set off at 8.45 the day went really well and I covered 81
miles am now in Callington in nice b and b and just about to get some thing to
eat and perhaps a pint

African adventures for the D 1200 Group Study Exchange team

The GSE Team 2012

The GSE Team 2012

In a week’s time the District 1200 Group Study Exchange (GSE) team will embark on a trip of a lifetime to Zambia, Malawi and Mozambique for a month. The team introduced themselves at the District Assembly last weekend, where they made a presentation explaining what they hoped to gain from the GSE experience.
The team will stay with Rotarian host families from District 9210, learning about the host country’s culture and institutions, observe how their vocations are practiced abroad, develop personal and professional relationships, and exchange ideas.
The team would like to say a big ‘asante sana’ – (swahili for thank you!) to their clubs for making this amazing opportunity possible. A special thank you also goes to David Yates from Minehead Rotary for his efforts arranging the trip; and to Team Leader Bob Nation from Chippenham Rotary for all his help and support so far.
You can keep up to date with the team’s progress on their blog http://gseafrica2012.blogspot.co.uk/

FRENCH VISITORS SURVIVE THE STORMS!

The French Visit Melksham ClubEveryone agreed that the weather during the visit of the Guingamp, our Twin Rotary Club from Britanny, was generally the worst that anyone could remember- but it did not spoil the programme.

President Ruth Fivash welcomed the party at a lunch in the Whitley Reading Rooms before the guests dispersed to a variety of Rotarian homes, including for Terry and Juliet Bazeley a party of 4, Rotarian Alexandre and Anne his wife, but also his mother-in-law Marielle and his 4 year old son Tom, late replacements to the party because of illness. The Melksham Club asked that special good wishes be given to Rotarian Pierre Janier, an Honorary Member of the Melksham Club. Later that evening Terry and Juliet hosted a dinner party for 10, with similar parties at other homes.

The Wadworths Brewery visit was a great success on Saturday, particularly the opportunity to sample a variety of beers after the tour, before shopping and lunch in the town. In the evening, Pauline Jacomb ensured that the Safari Supper ran smoothly, starting with an aperitif at the Corsham home of Honorary Rotarian Mrs Janet Smith. Our French visitors were later clearly impressed with the Art House Café in the Market Place, admiring the art work on display, the fresh décor and the excellent dessert and coffee served by Mrs Tessa Missen and helpers.

Peter King managed a short tour of the Corsham Almshouses for Terry and Juliet’s party on Sunday morning before joining everyone for President Ruth’s Drinks reception in the Art House Café. A really leisurely Farewell lunch at Beechfield House Hotel provided a most enjoyable climax to the visit, with sincere best wishes for the visitors on the return journey which promised further stormy weather. The Guingamp visitors promised us much better weather for the Melksham Club’s return visit in 2013!

Peter King, Melkesham Club Press Officer.

Out of This World – Sc-Fi at Corsham

Chippenham Club at Sci_Fi in CorshamOn Saturday 28th April, a few members of The Chippenham Rotary Club (Rotarians Peter James, ‘Biggles’ Mathers and Jane Kirby), and a friend of Rotary (Louie) took an ‘Out of this World’ trip in their local Tardis to join many other time travelers at a Sci-Fi Convention in Corsham.

Chippenham Club at the Sci-Fi in CorshamThis is an annual event and this year the Rotary Club of Chippenham was invited to take a table within one of the halls to promote Rotary. The event attracted approximately 2,500 visitors who came to see characters from Star Wars, Dr Who and Star Trek. A table was set up table and very quickly Peter James drew the attention of both young and old to have a go at ‘Snap the Rat.’

Many visitors came dressed up in Sci-Fi gear, one of whom was an old friend Hon’ Rotarian Ken Hulbert. (Pictured left above) We understand he was in search of Avatar but he had landed on the wrong planet! It was a great day and Peter kept going with his entertainment all day, many leaflets were taken about ‘Art in the Park.’ The youngsters soon grabbed all the sweets, provided by Louie. What’s more, several time travelers said they were looking forward to another landing at ‘Art in the Park’ in July. Thanks go to Louie helping out and for obtaining this opportunity. Books For Children At Home & Overseas

Last year Bradford on Avon Rotary Club gave Usborne dictionaries
to all our local Primary Schools & St. Laurence Comprehensive which
were gratefully received.
Since then we have looked further afield & are supporting Valerie
McGiven in her work with the children of Choba in Tanzania.Valerie
who lives locally spends half her time here & half in Tanzania & having seen the need for an infant school she set one up in an old
building, which was so successful she was asked to set up & build
a new junior school. This she is in the process of doing helped by
the local villagers, they are now raising money for their fifth class-
room.
Bradford Rotary decided to support Valerie by raising £1000 to
purchase text books that were so badly needed by the children &
as you can see from the photo the books are in English which is the
language they have to learn in by law.
The village has no electricity, hence no computers, they are looking
at a solar power alternative which the Club hope we can support in
the future.
